ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT

English proficiency refers to the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English effectively. It encompasses a range of language skills, including vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and the ability to comprehend spoken and written English in various contexts. High English proficiency means that a person can communicate clearly and confidently in various contexts, such as academic, professional, and social situations.

English proficiency is often measured through standardized tests such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), Duolingo English test, Cambridge English Qualifications, or other similar exams, especially for non-native speakers who are looking to study, work, or immigrate to English-speaking countries. However, many institutions (Universities) waive this requirement if the student has completed at least three years of study in a school where English was the primary medium of instruction. This policy helps streamline the application process for students already proficient in English through their previous education.

HOW DO I SHOW THE UNIVERSITY THAT I HAVE STUDIED IN THE ENGLISH SYSTEM?

There is a letter (document) that the student has to request from the School he has graduated from confirming that the student studied his studies in the English system. This document has to be signed and stamped by the head of school administration. See the Sample of this letter via this link:

Some universities, including the African Leadership University (ALU), are revolutionizing the assessment of applicants' English proficiency by offering the ALU English Proficiency Test (EPT) at no cost. This innovative approach not only eliminates financial barriers for prospective students but also ensures that applicants can demonstrate their language skills effectively. For the students planning to take any test either the one from ALU or some standardized tests, here's one of the English proficiency measures (EF SET) you can use for practice while preparing for your test:

So, when applying to universities, English language requirements can vary significantly. Some institutions may accept standardized tests like Duolingo, IELTS, or others but might also offer waivers if you can prove prior education in an English-speaking system, which is a common policy. Others, such as ALU, may require you to take their own language test, while some universities might not require any proof of English proficiency at all.

Therefore, it depends on the university you're applying to and students should carefully review each university’s policies to identify the best path to showcase their English proficiency. This way, you can choose the most suitable way to demonstrate your English proficiency based on their requirements.
