The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) offers a life-changing opportunity for talented young Africans who face significant social and economic barriers. The Program fully supports exceptional students pursuing Master of Science degrees while empowering them to become innovative leaders committed to transforming their communities and the continent at large.

CMU-Africa, located in Kigali, Rwanda, is part of a global network of 33 Mastercard Foundation partner institutions dedicated to developing Africa’s next generation of leaders. Established in 2016, the Scholars Program at CMU-Africa invests in education as a driver of social and economic change by nurturing students through comprehensive academic, professional, and leadership development opportunities.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To qualify for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, applicants must:

• Show a clear dedication to giving back to their communities
• Exhibit leadership potential and ability to influence positive change
• Be admitted to one of CMU-Africa’s eligible master’s degree programs
(The scholarship is only awarded after securing academic admission.)

• Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT)
• Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering (MS ECE)
• Master of Science in Engineering Artificial Intelligence (MS EAI)

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Applicants must prepare the following:
• Completed online application form
• Academic transcripts and degree certificates
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Personal statement / statement of purpose
• Letters of recommendation
• English proficiency test (DET, IELTS, or TOEFL)
• Valid identification document
• Any additional documents required by CMU-Africa admissions
Note: For early applicants before December 15, CMU-Africa covers competency test fees.

Step 2: Complete Competency Tests
Submit required English proficiency and other tests as indicated by the admissions team.
