UGHE, launched in Rwanda in 2015, is an initiative of Partners In Health (PIH) and is committed to training the next generation of global health leaders. Rooted in the values of equity, academic excellence, social justice, and innovation, the university seeks professionals who are eager to contribute to high-quality education, student success, clinical training, research, and impactful communication. The current openings include positions in academic writing support, psychiatry education, and strategic health communications.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Applicants interested in joining UGHE must possess qualifications, experience, and competencies relevant to the specific position applied for. In general, candidates should demonstrate strong professional ethics, excellent communication skills, commitment to equity and academic integrity, and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and mission-driven environment.
Specific eligibility requirements include:
For Writing Centre Assistant
· Relevant academic background in a field related to writing, education, humanities, communication, or a closely related discipline
· Strong ability to support academic writing, oral communication, and student learning
· Experience or demonstrated capacity to assist multilingual and English-as-an-additional-language learners
· Ability to provide one-on-one consultations, organize workshops, and maintain academic support records
For Faculty, Psychiatry
· Strong academic and professional background in Psychiatry, Clinical Medicine, or a related field
· Capacity to deliver high-quality medical education, clinical teaching, mentorship, and scholarly activity
· Ability to contribute to psychiatry clerkships, residency training, and mental health research
· Willingness to work across UGHE teaching sites in Rwanda and collaborate with academic and clinical teams
For Creative Writer
· A degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Health, International Development, or a related field
· A master’s degree in Global Health Communications, Public Health, or a writing-intensive discipline is strongly preferred
· A portfolio of published or distributed written work, including at least one long-form piece such as a report, white paper, case study, or feature article
· 3–5 years of demonstrated professional writing experience, preferably in a global health, academic, or research-related environment
· Strong ability to translate technical and scientific content into accessible and compelling narratives for diverse audiences
AVAILABLE POSITIONS
UGHE is currently recruiting for the following positions:
1. Writing Centre Assistant
· Department: Humanities and Social Sciences
· Reports To: Coordinator, University Writing Centre
· Contract Type: Full-Time, Fixed-Term (2 Years)
· Location: UGHE Butaro Campus
2. Faculty, Psychiatry
· Department: Psychiatry / Division of Clinical Medicine
· Reports To: Head of Psychiatry Department
· Location: Butaro Campus, with possible frequent travel to Kigali Campus and other teaching sites across Rwanda
3. Creative Writer, LEAP Centre
· Department: Marketing and Communications, Office of the Vice Chancellor
· Reports To: Marketing and Communications Manager, UGHE, with a dotted reporting line to the Cluster Lead of Evidence to Practice at LEAP Centre
· Location: Kigali, Rwanda, with occasional international travel required (5–10%)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Writing Centre Assistant
The Writing Centre Assistant will support the development of students’ academic writing and oral communication skills, especially among multilingual and English-as-an-additional-language learners in the MBBS and MGHD programs. Key responsibilities include:
· Conducting one-on-one and small-group consultations for students needing support in academic writing and oral communication
· Assisting students with academic paragraph development, essay and paper organization, scientific and health-professions writing, literature reviews, presentation preparation, citation and referencing, grammar, clarity, coherence, and academic tone
· Supporting multilingual and ESL learners in adapting to academic communication expectations in higher education
· Providing constructive feedback that promotes independent learning and confidence-building
· Supporting faculty referral processes for students requiring communication support
· Identifying recurring writing and presentation challenges among student cohorts
· Maintaining consultation records, referral logs, and intervention documentation
· Contributing to increased student engagement with Writing Centre services, improved communication confidence, expanded workshop programming, and stronger institutional communication support systems
Faculty, Psychiatry
The Faculty, Psychiatry will play a key role in strengthening UGHE’s psychiatry education and training by supporting teaching, clinical clerkships, residency development, mentorship, and mental health research. Main responsibilities include:
· Delivering teaching in both clinical and classroom settings across UGHE programs
· Facilitating bedside teaching, tutorials, simulations, and small-group sessions
· Developing and updating course materials, including syllabi, learning objectives, assessments, and teaching resources
· Teaching, supervising, and mentoring psychiatry residents and medical students during psychiatry clerkships
· Contributing to the teaching of both basic and clinical sciences across programs
· Participating in formative and summative examinations
· Supporting the planning and implementation of clinical clerkships in collaboration with coordinators
· Assisting in the development and implementation of a Psychiatry Residency Training Program
· Ensuring alignment of clinical teaching with curriculum requirements and learning objectives
· Contributing to the evaluation and improvement of clinical learning environments
· Supporting mental health research and research training within the university
Creative Writer, LEAP Centre
The Creative Writer will support the external communications and knowledge dissemination mission of the LEAP Centre by producing compelling written content, translating technical health information into accessible narratives, and contributing to strategic storytelling. Key responsibilities include:
· Supporting the development and implementation of LEAP’s communications and engagement strategy
· Defining and maintaining LEAP’s editorial voice across written communications materials
· Producing internal and external communication materials such as newsletters, annual reports, briefs, op-eds, case studies, white papers, and promotional materials
· Managing and updating written content across LEAP’s web and social media platforms
· Translating complex implementation findings, health systems data, and frontline insights into clear and engaging narratives
· Working with researchers, program leads, and implementing partners to develop written products for policymakers, donors, collaborators, and the broader global health community
· Leading writing and editorial support for knowledge products including case studies, technical reports, white papers, and learning briefs
· Providing communications and layout support for knowledge products to ensure consistency with LEAP and UGHE branding
· Developing scripts, voice-over copy, and story treatments for video and multimedia productions
· Supporting planning, promotion, and communications for LEAP-hosted webinars, workshops, convenings, and launches
